Virgal: Epitome Of Valor Of Unsung Heroes As Cherished By Women
Cultural Contours of History and Archaeology (Festschrift In honour of Prof. P. Chenna Reddy), Volume V- Art, B R Publishing, New Delhi, ISBN: 9789350500699, 2014
Consistent warfare among various dynasties and local skirmishes paved way for chivalry in ancient Deccan. The heroes were fired with the ideal of serving their village and their lords, even at the cost of their lives. Life was trivial to them when it was a question of personal prestige, the prestige of their village or of their master and above all the honour of the women in their village. They preferred to die than face infamy. The society also duly honored the demised heroes who laid down their lives by erecting hero stone or virgal.
